walevitt Posted September 14, 2023 Posted September 14, 2023 My website https://thecompleteworksofshakespeare.com/ has an ongoing issue, where the homepage does really well in SEO rankings, but any of the interior pages (which were built as blog posts in Squarespace) do really poorly in SEO rankings. I'd previously done a number of SEO optimizing/fixes to try and improve this, including changing the page titles to H1, and custom formatting each of the page titles/descriptions, etc. As you can see attached, if you Google "shakespeare full text read for free online" my website is the first hit (directing you to the homepage). However if you Google for example "hamlet full text read for free online" it doesn't even appear in the first several pages of Google results. It seems that specific pages don't index well on SEO. Any thoughts on how I can improve this so that when people search of a specific Shakespeare play, the specific page on The Complete Works of Shakespeare comes up at the top of the results? Thank you for your help!
SEOSpace_Henry Posted September 14, 2023 Posted September 14, 2023 Hey @walevitt - there's a number of things this could be: Backlinks - links from other sites to your blog posts will boost the chance of them ranking - attached, your domain authority (a score that indicates how much of an authority you are) is 3.6 - increasing this will help Google pickup more pages Keyword cannibalization - tricky to tell if this is occurring across your site, but my plugin has detected there could be risk for your Macbeth page, so it's potentially an issue across your site (the below video will allow you to check this) Technical errors - checkout the below video where I explain how to use Google Search Console to detect errors: walevitt 1 Henry Purchase Founder of SEOSpace - the SEO plugin for Squarespace. Collaborada Posted September 17, 2023 Posted September 17, 2023 Hi @walevitt. The plays are indexed. The blog itself is poorly indexed because the posts are insufficient. You can disregard the comment above about domain authority as those sorts of metrics don't impact Google ranking. For instance, I did a search for a highly competitive keyword and your homepage was just below MIT, Barnes & Noble, and Amazon, and above the Folger Shakespeare Library. The keyword cannibalization comment can also be disregarded as the play will not "compete" with a "fun facts" post. With proper site structure and supporting content the plays might eventually perform. Building high-performance websites with expert SEO for local and national reach. Have an SEO question? walevitt Posted September 19, 2023 Author Posted September 19, 2023 @ChristineDarby Thanks for your help. Are there steps that I can take to improve site structure and supporting content? Not totally clear on what "posts are insufficient" means — and is there a way to address that? Many thanks.
