Adding options/customization on the product page without multiple variants/SKU

I sell sets of colored straws and have a "create your own bundle" option as a product, which allows them to add 6 different colors to a custom set. We have over 30 color options and 3 sizes. I have zero concern about inventory at this point and don't need/want every possible combo as a variant, which is what it's trying to do. 

What I would like to have is a listing that has either drop-downs or text boxes for "color 1", "color 2", "color 3", etc. so they can select/type their 6 colors, then add the whole thing to their cart. It's more just a customization option, more than a SKU. Currently I have to have a little blurb about "add your color selections to the 'additional information' box at checkout", then another blurb in that box at checkout about how to write out the colors, etc. I just feel there HAS to be an easier way, especially when they want more than 1 custom pack.
