How to show the filter and search AFTER you have filtered by category

Hi there!

When filtering articles by 'category' is there a way to still see the search box and or the title of the filter? 

Also, is there an option to go back to search (or the main blog summary page)? At the moment, only the function to go to previous or following posts is available?

Sadly, the built-in search and filtering capabilities are very basic. For improved filtering and search, I recommend taking a look at the excellent Universal Filter plugin. 

Thanks @paul2009 do you think that this plugin will provide the ability to still show the filter and search bar once categories have been filtered and are showing the filtered results?

Their Universal Filter plugin uses its own search and filtering options in place of standard features, but it does use the Categories and Tags that you've added and they can be combined. I'm not sure of this answers your question, but here's an example of a site using it where I've selected two weights and then added a search term:
