Cannot make simple image grid in email campaigns

The built in image grid tool in the EMAIL campaign builder does not allow a simple two-over-two image layout. Adding two grids with just two images each leaves giant gaps between the images and stretches them, distorting their aspect ratio. There isn't even a way to add simple html code from Fireworks (image slices) or even make a table. How do I make a four-square image clickable to four different pages on the client's website? Any ideas?
