KristinaSherk
Please let me know if you think this is better suited for a different category. Im very new to this. I am running a site audit of my new site through SEMRUSH. I have a few errors that hit on each of my pages. I dont think I have the ability to fix these and I am quite frustrated (well if I cant fix them I will be quite upset). Does anyone know how to fix these problems? Problem 1: Too large JavaScript and CSS total size - - -About the issue: this issue is triggered if the total transfer size of the JavaScript and CSS files used on your page exceeds 2 MB. The size of the JavaScript and CSS files used on a webpage is one of the important factors for a page's load time. Having lots of clunky JavaScript and CSS files make your webpage "heavier" in weight, thus increasing its load time. This in turn leads to a poor user experience and lower search engine rankings. Problem 2: Low text to HTML ratio - this error hits for all 85 of my pages. But there are some pages which have over 1000 words on them. This means that theres so much HTML that I cant even try to get this up to the appropriate percentage value (10%). Heres what SEMRUSH says about the issue: Your text to HTML ratio indicates the amount of actual text you have on your webpage compared to the amount of code. This issue is triggered when your text to HTML is 10% or less. Search engines have begun focusing on pages that contain more content. That's why a higher text to HTML ratio means your page has a better chance of getting a good position in search results. Less code increases your page's load speed and also helps your rankings. It also helps search engine robots crawl your website faster. Problem 3: Unminified JavaScript and CSS files: (this error hits for all 85 of my pages) About the issue Minification is the process of removing unnecessary lines, white space and comments from the source code. Minifying JavaScript and CSS files makes their size smaller, thereby decreasing your page load time, providing a better user experience and improving your search engine rankings. I find it hard for a website company like squarespace to allow these kinds of issues to occur on all of the pages they design. Im hoping someone here can help me jimmy-rig the system so I can get rid of some of these errors. Edited July 5, 2023 by KristinaSherk Link to comment

SEOSpace_Henry
Hi @KristinaSherk, Unfortunately, you can't change most of these on Squarespace - SQSP is incredibly easy to use, however, this means it's less customisable than other website builders. In this case, it means you can't change the code to fix these warnings. These are just warnings however, and plenty of other Squarespace websites have these issues and are still able to rank on Google, as they're not critical things that will hold you back. If you focus on blogging, building links and solid on-page SEO, you won't have any problems. Happy to answer any additional questions. GlynMusica
Instead of SEMRUSH install Google Lighthouse Extension in Google Chrome and use that. If you use Chrome a lot and have extentions, then make sure you enable the Lighthouse extension to run in Incognito and you can then run mobile and desktop tests. You will also get much better information about how to fix the problem and know that it is fixing it for one of the biggest traffic sources for websites. You can also run some preconnect in code injection based on an analsis of the network files that your specific SS site pulls in at runtime. Good luck.
