KateG
Hi - I have a customer who has a site and doesn't know whether to have the current one updated or create a brand new one. I'm wondering what effect it would have on the SEO if a new one was created. Any advice would be much appreciated. Link to comment

This depends on so many factors, including the version and template being used and whether they need to retain 'backend' data like customer details, order details and so on. If you want to upgrade from v7.0 to v7.1, I would always recommend updating the existing site rather than starting a new one. That said, regardless of whether you build new or update the existing site, changes can cause a site's search ranking to dip temporarily. However, if you follow SEO best practice to optimise the site, you should be able to limit any impact and potentially help the site's SEO performance in the long run. Did this help? EllaSEO
I'd also recommend running the current URL through a site audit tool (you can try the free ahrefs Website Checker https://ahrefs.com/website-checker) to see if there are any keywords and backlinks associated with the original site. Even if you choose to create a new site with a new URL, it's worthwhile to check. Then, when you launch the new site, you can set up a 301 redirect from the old URL to the new one to pass on any domain authority and keyword rankings 🙂 Link to comment
