template or customization to display an image archive

Recommended Posts

Hello, I have a site on Square Space and am looking to create a browsable image archive but in looking at available template options I didn't see a way to do this.

What I'm after is similar to a museum website where I can display a list of product categories as a gallery view, and for those catetories to then display the actual products that I wish to showcase. Further clicking on a product will provide more information and images for it. Here is an example layout that I'm after: https://www.metmuseum.org/art/the-collection#browse-by

Is there an out of the box template that would allow me to do that ? If not, where can I find information about creating my own custom display to achieve this result?

It sounds like you are want a design pattern that has been discussed several times on the forum. That pattern is to use a Store page but bypass the main store page which lists all the products, create a regular page that is an index directly into the categories.

You start by putting your store page in the Not Linked area so that a site visitor can't easily get to your main store page that lists all the products.

Then you create a regular page with pictures and links directly to the categories of your store page.

That is a very basic overview of the overall effect. There are other user flow issues that need to be addressed but that is more detail that I can go into.

Does this sound like something that would work for your scenario?

Thank you, @creedon. I will experiment with your solution and may reach out again if it doesn't achieve what we're after. One thing that I wasn't sure about is if it is possible to create three levels using this approach: two levels of "regular" pages where one is at the top level like an "art genres" page with links to a second "regular" page of items in that genre. Clicking on a given item  then renders the the item's details and additional views.

You can have as many levels as you want before you dive into either a store category page or a product details page. You just have to link the higher level pages into a sensible structure.

One thing that won't be automatic is that the store pages have no concept of these higher level pages that are manually created. So if you need a way to navigate back up the hierarchy then that would have to be addressed. There are no premade solutions for this issue.
