Adding variations without adding to inventory

How do you add a variation to a product without it adding to your inventory. I'm an embroiderer and for example, a person can purchase a stuffed animal and I can embroider on the belly and the bottom. How do I add that variation without it adding to my inventory? Right now if I have #1 bear and the option to embroider on the belly or on the belly & bottom. When I add the variation it bumps my inventory to #2 bears.

Thanks!

Try using the Add-On Product feature. Create an "Add Embroidery" product and then add this to the products where you want to offer embroidery. You can use a Custom Product Form on the "Add Embroidery" product to prompt for text to be embroidered.
