aah interesting because the people i am doing this for sent me all sorts of links of sites not doing it this way. I think its fine but some can be particular. even when one is doing a website for free

If one searches the web they can find just about anything to support their view of how they would like things to be done.

If they are set on the behaviour they say they want it may be hard to sell them on something different.

The general technique that is being used these days is lazy loading or just in time loading. The idea being that websites have gotten bigger and more complex and take longer to load. It's better to show some sign of life so that your site visitor knows that things are happening and will hang on for a bit. As opposed to not doing anything for many seconds and potentially losing the visitor because they can't see any signs of life.
