Workaround to get a Category Navigation Block

Recommended Posts

Hey,

I'm helping out a church that have used squarespace to build their website. I've been helping them get a podcast setup to run from squarespace.

The podcast side of things works fine, but on the 'sermons' page I want to display a grid of their sermon series. ( For example like this: http://sermons.ruc.org.za/series/)

When sermons (blog posts) are added they are categorised according to the series that they are from, and on the current page I can display a text list of categories using an Archive Block. See the current page: https://www.g1fourways.com/sermons

I have use the Summary Block to display the 'recent sermons' but I can't configure the Summary Block to show a grid of categories. it always shows a list of individual sermons (blog posts)

After some googling and conversation with Chat GPT, I believe that what I need to display is the Category Navigation Block. However this block is not available with the template they are using, Hayden. GPT tells me that a template from the Brine family should have it.

I have tried to install some templates from that family, Mojave, Burke, Basil etc. I don't want to make them live before I confirm that they will work, so I have just been looking at the preview but under the preview I still can't add a Category Navigation Block...

GPT also listed a bunch of plugins that should be able to do this, but it's info is obviously out dated as I cannot find any of these plugins any more... (Squarestudio Category Navigation for example)

Can anyone confirm that the Category Navigation block will work? Anyone with examples of website and templates that they are doing this on??

I just don't want to install a new template and go through the work of changing colours and fonts to make the site look the same as it currently does, going though every page to fix any layout problems etc... It would probably take me less time to build the series section manually with images linked to the categories, but I was hoping to have a dynamic/automatic setup so that I don't have to manually add new series every time.

Aside from the solutions that require a lot of rebuilding (switching to squaresapce 7.1 for example) what are my options..?

There's hope for humans because the AI is wrong 🙂There is no such thing as a Category Navigation Block.

However, you can emulate the WordPress example by creating a series of image thumbnails, each linking to a category, for example:

/g1-sermons/category/Relatable

/g1-sermons/category/Renew

Yeah, GPT gave me different answers and kept apologizing when i pointed it out 🤣

OK, I was really hoping i wouldn't have to do it manually but I guess that's the only way...
