Image Alt Text Doesn't Save - Solution/Workaround

Recommended Posts

For anyone that is adding alt text to images and find that sometimes they aren't saving, I have some workarounds for you.

Normally alt text will save automatically. These are solutions for when that doesn't happen.

Be careful where you click.

This will probably solve most of your issues. After adding your alt text, do not click on a paragraph. The image editor will close without saving your progress. Click somewhere that doesn't have an element. For example, the white space to the left or right of your web page (if there is any).

Don't scroll too far.

Scrolling while in the image editor may cause the image editor to close automatically without saving any progress. You can scroll, just not too far. Rule of thumb: make sure you can see the image you're editing.

Sometimes it's just not working.

Go into your image editor and add your alt text. If the SAVE button on your page editor (top left of page) is highlighted while you're in the image editor, click the SAVE button and that will save the alt text.

If all else fails.

If the SAVE button isn't highlighted while you're in the image editor, and clicking in the right spot doesn't work, make an edit on your page. Somewhere, like a paragraph. You can add a space at the end of a paragraph. The SAVE button will highlight. Once it's highlighted, go into your image editor and add the alt text, then click SAVE before leaving the image editor. That should work.

Good luck. This is a reported bug. We'll see if it ever gets fixed.

I also have this same issue on Ahmir Miller.  When creating a new blog post, the alt image and file names that we add do not save when saving the blog.  This has been happening for the last couple of months and it's very frustrating as we've seen a direct connection between our SEO rankings and not having these keyword friendly names and alt tags.

Recenlty I found a work around but it's time consuming and annoying. Squarespace will save the alt image / filenames info IF you hit save every 2-3 photos.  So you have to save as you go through the whole blog.  If you forget once and accidentally do 4-5 images prior to saving, then you lose all of those and have to redo them again.  It's extremely frustrating!

Squarespace PLEASE FIX THIS!!

I haven't had this issue until recently. Unfortunately, none of the workaround options worked, and Squarespace's help was basically, "We know it's an issue". ACK

Alt text doesn't show up using custom code blocks either. It's in the code, but upon Inspecting, it just isn't there. If anyone figures this one out, pleeease tag me.

Yes, this is still happening. For example, it appears to happen every time I replace a photo (e.g., with an updated image in the Assets Library). After replacing and before closing the settings, I check all the fields in the Content tab, including Alt Text, then close the settings. If I then return to the settings, the Alt Text that I just saw will have been deleted.
