Custom email and sqaurespace- just transfered my domain

Hi.  

 I'm reading about custom emails and everything says I need a google workspace account for a custom email.    I just transferred my domain, where I had a FREE custom email.   

Google workspace charges a monthly subscription.  Is this the only way to get my custom email back?
