Customize placement of subcategories

Hello

I'm currently using the 'Wells' template and have the main navigation to the left which is the default layout. 

Is there any way of having the sub categories of the main navigation appear somewhere else on the page rather than as just drop downs right below each category?

For instance,  when I click on a category I was wondering if the sub categories could appear on top / center of the page instead (to the right of the main navigation)?

See attached screenshot of the default design vs proposed mockup.   If not, is there a template that could possibly allow for this type of layout?

There is no template with this feature.

You will need to use custom code to achieve it.
