How to add nested slides / alternate views to an image

I want to make it so that I have a simple grid of images but when you click on one, it opens in a lightbox with other views embedded in it. Is this possible? 

I tried customizing a product template to suit my needs since you could have multiple images for one item but it got too complicated. How can I click into an image to see more details/shots/alt views without navigating away from the page? The context is for showcasing artwork. Each piece has multiple pictures I want to keep together but only have the main images gridded, with the mini slideshow only being within the lightbox.

I didn't know how to make a grid of images, I'm doing mine individually and some are not aligning as the same size with the others???

I would love to nest images together to get different views etc, but maintaining each painting separately.

So do you mean each images in the grid will open its own seperated gallery on lightbox?
