Add a lightbox feature to auto-layout with custom code?

I am using a "simple list" auto layout and need to be able to click on the images to enlarge them in a lightbox. I'm aware that this is currently not possible with their standard features. Does anyone know a workaround or custom code? (ps. i don't want to use a gallery or single images for this, as suggested by the squarespace help team, because of the formatting I am trying to achieve) Thank you!!

Yes this is not possible with default feature.

Lightbox feature is complex so you will need to use a 3rd party plugin.
