Product Preview Customization

I'm doing some research for an upcoming client's site. They really love how MAN-TLE has this cool "dot" feature on their products, which is basically just a hover on quick view (or so it seems). Would anyone know how to even do this witchery? (replacing the "quick view" text with a shape/image/dot, and then having quick view just pull up the link to the product).
