No you are not missing something.

SS released FE way before is was truly ready for primetime.

What most software developers today call release software is really pre-beta software.

what in the world is with fluid engine being garbage on ipads?

This is a known issue with the Fluid Engine layout tool. There are desktop and mobile layouts but there isn't a tablet specific layout yet so avoiding layout issues on tablet and smaller-sized screens can be difficult unless you lay the page out specifically to avoid this issue.

The best advice I can give at the moment is to use LayoutEngine (now known as the "classic" editor) for sections that don't scale well on tablets. You can use both types of section on the same page.

Longer term, I expect these issues will be resolved. The team have made some tweaks to try to improve the situation but, as pageviews on tablets only account for around 2% of visitors, a full blown solution for tablets has not yet been provided.

You'll find lots of noise about this on the forums, but if you have specific examples of sites where this is an issue, the best way to pass this feedback to Squarespace employees is to open a support ticket through Squarespace Customer Care.
