How to add an extended warranty option and keep inventory correct?

Hi,  I sell a physical product, and need to keep track inventory so we don't sell something that doesn't exist.  I would like to give my customers the option to buy some add-ons, like an extended warranty.   We have done that by creating a product variant with the extended warranty, but then the inventory count gets messed up.  Purchasing with or without the extended warranty should both pull from the same physical stash of machines.  Is there a workaround to do this?  I have some ideas using webhooks and automations, but am hoping for something simpler that doesn't require hiring a developer and using the commerce advanced plan.  Thanks!

There are two ways to solve this:

1. Offer the extended warranty as a separate product so that variants are not necessary (recommended).

2. Use third party code to synchronise the stock levels via the Inventory API. A developer could write a solution but the cheaper option (from US$35 per month) is to subscribe to the Squarespace Extension called Trunk Inventory which does this for you.

Thanks, Paul.  We are currently doing the "separate product" option, but it requires users to scroll down past the "order" button, and I think a lot of people don't make it that far.  Trunk inventory looks like it would work, although $35 only buys 100 transactions, and it pains me when an extension like that costs multiples more than we pay for the Squarespace site itself. 🙂

If you would like to explore ways to improve the experience for customers, and potentially increase take up of your warranty, please provide us with a link to the page on the site so we can take a look. It is difficult to suggest detailed options if we cannot see the issue 🙂.

Regarding the cost of Trunk, I agree entirely and wish there was an integrated option.
