It looks like you are getting around the lack of a lightbox option and adding the image location as the image link. This merely loads the image in a new tab, there is no styling possible as this is not loading your website, just the image (no header, no footer, no CSS). The only way to add a margin would be to add this to the image itself. (to look best png with a transparent margin, but this won't be great for image optimization and load time).

My best recommendation would simply be to use a gallery that has the lightbox functionality (i.e. any of the non-slideshow types).

Yes, it's a shame that the slideshow galleries don't have the lightbox feature, it's because of the interactive nature of a slideshow, but would still be nice even if it create a slightly confused user experience.
