How do I get background image to fit inside main body area

Hi there,

I've designed a background for my site. The image file is transparent, and it has some padding around the central image/motif. However, when I use it as the main background for my site, the image is cropped on all four side. I'd like the full image to be shown in the center of the background. It is intended to be large to fill out the background, but I'd like a small amount of padding on all four sides so none of the image is cropped. How do I do this?
