Z-index not working as expected

I'm wondering if z-index works cause it doesn't seem to change any layering if I apply it on two images.

Should it normally just work out of the box?

I'd recommend searching this kind of thing up on W3 (https://www.w3schools.com/cssref/pr_pos_z-index.asp).

To kind of piggy-back on that as it relates to Squarespace, you'll want to make sure that 1) you're targeting the image as specifically as you can and 2) you aren't applying the property to an element that already has z-index applied to it.

Also, with Fluid Engine, this becomes even easier to accomplish and shouldn't require additional layering that you can't do out of the box.
