How can I fix 'Not-indexed' pages on Google Search Console?

Recommended Posts

I recently built a website for a client in Squarespace — the site went live in June this year. Recently, they have approached me informing me of Not-indexed pages showing in their Google Search Console. I submitted the site map back in June. When I click on the sitemaps tab and check the index coverage of the site map, it shows that 74 pages are successfully indexed, and 6 are not. I've since asked the 6 pages to be re-crawled as they hadn't been crawled since the old site was live. These stats don't concern me and I'm happy with everything that is indexed as should be.

When I look at the main Pages tab in GSC, however, it shows 96 indexed and 175 not indexed – which concerns me! I haven't come across this issue before and don't have the expertise or vest knowledge to be able to fully determine why this is happening, what's an issue and what isn't, what needs fixing etc. The 6 issues showing are:

  • Alternate page with proper canonical tag: 75 pages
  • Page with redirect: 46 pages
  • Not found (404): 34 pages
  • Excluded by 'noindex' tag: 6 pages
  • Blocked by robots: 3 pages
  • Crawled - currently not indexed: 11 pages

A couple of issues =

  • A lot of the pages showing (particularly under the alternate page with proper canonical tag) are not URLs included in the site at all – a lot seem to relate to the blog posts or show a long string of letters/numbers/jibberish at the end of the main URL...?
  • Some of the pages mentioned show URLs from my client's old website, which I'm also finding odd as well

I added a lot of custom code to the site so wondering if this has had an impact at all? I'm just a little baffled why the site map pages look fine, but then so many more pages show on the main landing page of GSC.

If anyone has experienced this or knows how best to fix these issues, I'd be very grateful as I'm struggling to find any articles or videos that could help me despite endless searching and reaching out to Squarespace.

Thank you!
