Can I adjust how images "fill" the container at different breakpoints?

Is there a way to adjust how images "fill" their containers at different breakpoints? The only way I can get my grid system to work is by "filling" my image containers (see related question here). This works well for desktop:

And for smaller mobile sizes: 

But it's really problematic for tablet and larger mobile sizes: 

Is there any way to force a certain aspect ratio (or range of ratios?) I have no idea how to resolve this issue!
