My blog post are not being indexed by google.

Hi,

It seems that most of my blog post are not being indexed by google. I have submitted my sitemap and I have also submitted each page manually. I talked to two squarespace support agents and they basically just pointed me to an article that doesn't help. My pages are all set to public and there is no code injected on the site that would set it to no index. I would contact google but it's almost impossible to reach a real person. Anyone know what could be going on?

I'm not having much luck with this sort of thing either. I agree too with difficulty in trying to find real person to ask anything of...and not just being directed to irrelevant info.

sorry, no answer for you, just another question...

"Connect your Google Search Console account

The Search keywords panel shows how visitors locate your site. Connect and verify your site in this panel and return later to review the data:

  1. In the Home menu, click Analytics.
  2. Click Search keywords.
  3. Click Connect in the panel's pop-up...."

what pop-up saying connect?
there is none...

Does anyone know what I need to do?

Alison

You do not need to connect to GSC via SS. Just visit GSC from your browser and follow the steps to add your property.

This is a problem that Squarespace needs to address. I have at least 6 blogs that haven’t been indexed since March. I’ve requested that they be indexed and taken all of the proper steps to have them indexed, but there is still something keeping them in the “discovered, not indexed” status, while I have WordPress blogs created more recently have been indexed without issue.

As painful as it is, have you tried manually requesting an index?

FWIW, I too am in struggleville on this matter:

I'm trying to manually request index for a week and see if this makes any significant difference.

Good luck to all, looks like we're on our own on this one.

Has anyone found an issue for this? I'm getting the same errors and seeing that only my homepage is being indexed, nothing else, and primarily no blog articles, which is the purpose of my entire site.

Something must have changed from Squarespace's side in the last few weeks, seems like my new blog posts are getting indexed without any issues now....

I'm also having the same problem for my blog posts not being indexed. I've tried manually pushing it from SS settings to GSC and that doesn't work.

Additionally, my homepage will not be indexed by google because of a "soft404" I've tried adding content, etc. There's actually a lot of content.

From other forums It seems like a few other people have had this same problem when they shifted from 7.0-7.1

I noticed in the blog post settings, under 'share' in the options, there is a toggle to submit the posts to Google Search Console. I turned that on and will retest my site tomorrow after requesting another pass at indexing. I notice it's doing this on my products, too... but I will have to see if that is controlled elsewhere as I'm provided a different set of options for the individual products.

For months I couldn't understand why my blog posts would never come up on searches. Today, I finally found why. Google is NOT indexing any of them and all my SEO has been done right.

Then I came here for search, found this thread and to my dismay, none solutions offered.

How is this ever possible?  Blogging is what keeps my site active and yet none is ever going to be found.

Any updates on this? I imported my entire blog from blogger to my SS website for full integration and now I find out this.

Please SS team, offer a solution to this!! It is a deal breaker for me

Here are some things to check:

Your sitemap has not been submitted. You should always submit your sitemap when your site is live. On Squarespace sites, the sitemap will have the slug /sitemap.xml following the domain name.

Your site isn't linked to other sites. Make sure that other sites know about your site by linking to your website from other websites and linking to other sites from yours. Google discovers new sites from existing sites so if your site is "an island" that isn't connected to other sites, it won't be considered significant. For example, are your blog posts being shared by others online?

Your content or site is new. It takes some time for search engines to crawl a new post and even more time before it will index it. If you've added new content it can take anywhere from a day to several months for the new content to be indexed. The timing depends on many factors but if your site is seen as insignificant then Google won't rush to index it.

Your content is blocked. You can stop search engines from searching your blog by toggling the 'Hide from Search Results' options. Check the blog Page Settings to ensure these options are disabled:

Content quality and substance. The content should be both informative and of high quality (no disrespect intended - I haven't looked at your sites). The content should aim to answer questions, provide valuable information, or offer a unique perspective compared to other websites that cover the same field. If it doesn't meet these standards, Google is likely to favour another website that provides better-quality content, regardless of how many keywords appear in your content.

User experience. Google doesn’t want users spending too much time on a page because there are too many distractions like popups. Could this be an issue? Is your site easy to use? has it been designed to work well on mobile devices?

Duplicated or demo content.  Check that your posts don't contain images with demo titles and descriptions (as described here). There's a bug that causes this content to be added to images - and therefore to the sitemap.

Thanks for this Paul. I'm shocked to find out that my blog isn't appearing in the Sitemap.  Hide from search is disabled and always has been, so I don't know what went wrong. I will contact customer support, but is there anything I can do on my own to correct this?  As far as I know the Sitemap.xml cannot be edited.

Thanks for helping me understand this!

This is probably not a fix but is easy to do. Toggle all the buttons on, save, then toggle them off, save. Wait a bit then check the sitemap to see if the blog appears.

If it does then resubmit your sitemap to the search engines. If not then contact SS customer support.

Let us know how it goes.

Squarespace told me they found dummy text on my sitemap and that that was what was causing the issue

I'm pleased you've raised this again as it is a huge issue on every Squarespace 7.1 section that isn't using Fluid Engine.

Whenever an image block is added to a LayoutEngine ("Classic") section on Squarespace 7.1, for some inexplicable reason, Squarespace add the demo text "Make it stand out" and "Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.".

This issue has been happening since early 2021 and affects everyone who adding images to classic sections. I asked Squarespace about this issue again last week and, was told:

"While we understand it may be inconvenient, I do need to confirm that Engineering doesn’t currently have plans to fix or improve the sitemap issue you reported [in June 2021]."

There are further threads about this issue here:
