crowded text spacing

When typing in a text box, my lines overlap. I tried hitting return at the end of each line which seems a little ridiculous for a paragraph but even then, spacing is crowded like I have 1/2 spacing on. This happens in every text block. What am I missing? How do I format the line spacing in my text boxes?
