CSS Customization troubles

I'm working in 7.1 and using the code provided in the Squarespace tutorials, but it rarely-to-never works the way it's supposed to. Ex: .sqs-widgets-audio-player {background-color: #color!important}

I removed "widgets" and it works, but I'm inexperienced with CSS and don't want to mess around with the code too much for fear of doing something I can't undo. 

I wonder if anyone else is running into this issue and has found a solution. I'd just like a bit more intuitive customization without dipping my toes too far into coding.
