Maybe the simplest thing to do would be to give that area a background color. Try adding this to Custom CSS:

header.Header.Header--bottom.Header--overlay {
    background: #5b286a;
}

@christyprice Thanks anyway. Fyi I figured out by changing the CSS for my background image to .Header--top instead of .Header
