Are you using an old version of MacOS - El Capitan (10.11) or older?

That's your issue! Sadly your OS version is now too old to support current standards. Although the images are there, you can't see them. You'll need to upgrade to a newer version (Sierra or later) - if this is possible. If you're unsure about that, I recommend you reach out to Apple Support. They're usually pretty helpful, even for older devices and they'll tell you which version of the OS you can upgrade to.
