What is the grey panel underneath my product page thumbnail images?

Try adding to Design > Custom CSS /* product gallery scroll grey */ .ProductItem-gallery-thumbnails { overflow: hidden !important; }

Try adding to Design > Custom CSS 

/* product gallery scroll grey */
.ProductItem-gallery-thumbnails {
    overflow: hidden !important;
}

Yes. Maybe bug. It should be appears if too many thumbnail images.
