Adding background image to blog content box

Hi, i'm trying to add a background image to my blog content block. I've tried many of the codes from other questions including the one below but cannot get an image to populate. I don't want the image to include on my header or footer just the blog block unlike the one below. Can anyone offer assistance?

If I wanted to stretch the blog content box to the footer so there wasn't any background showing between the content box and the footer what code would I apply?
