So for some stupid reason I turned on developer mode. What are the consequences of turning it off?

it will remove all the changes you made with your template

When you disable developer mode, you'll lose: All content in block fields, like sidebars, headers, and footers. Changes to the template, including custom collections, new or modified layouts and regions, new or modified scripts and styles, and uploaded assets and custom types

I turned on developer mode without really realizing what I was getting myself into. I was trying to add some custom code into the header, but it wasn't working, and I thought maybe it needed to be enabled. Stupid!

I've read everything and it sounds like if I turn Developer Mode off, it will revert back to the system defaults for my template. Is there any way around this? Should I just leave Developer Mode on?
