Can I Switch FROM a Blank Template?

Recommended Posts

I started a new Squarespace site but am not new to Squarespace. While initially setting it up, I chose a Blank Template because I didn't want to take the time at the moment to browse templates. Now that I have the site in my account and a few basic settings in place, I'm ready to choose a template. However, I cannot see a way to switch templates. When I go into the "Design" menu, there is no "Template" option. It's missing. (See image.) Is this because I chose a blank template? If so, how can I add a regular template?

Sounds like you are using v7.1. What SS calls templates for v7.1 are not like templates work in v7.0. All v7.1 sites have the same underlying structure. Whereas with v7.0 changing a template can make major changes to the underlying structure of the site.

In v7.1 what SS calls templates are really a group of color themes with particular settings, along with a few other bits and bobs. The underlying structure does not change.

So, with some work any v7.1 site can be made to look like any other v7.1 at least as far as the colors go.

Unfortunately there is not an easy way to switch "templates" on v7.1.

Now if you've just started your site and you've not paid yet and not invested a lot of time changing the site you could start another trial site with the v7.1 template you want to use.

You cannot 'reset' to one of the professionally designed layouts (unhelpfully called 'templates' by Squarespace) once you've started a site. To choose a different professionally designed layout you must start a new trial and abandon any work on your current trial.

Why? Because on Squarespace 7.1, you only get one shot at picking a professionally designed initial layout. Once you've picked a layout (or 'template') your site has the same features and capabilities as every other Squarespace 7.1 design.

The older Squarespace platform (known as 7.0) does have a 'switch template' feature, but this is because these older templates have different features and capabilities.

Hello fellows,

The documentation on Squarespace (as of this date), still reflects the ability to modify a "template" (in both 7.0 and 7.1) within the Design options. This is clearly not true.

I have not used Squarespace in some years, and I'm just coming back to the platform. This upgrade from template to... whatever this is, seems more like a limiting factor than a contribution that expands Squarespace's potential. Even if the components are essentially the same, there is value to being able to test and change what you're doing based on existing available design configurations.

If there's a workaround to this, I'd be very interested in hearing about it. This feels incomplete.

Here is the documentation: Switching templates. It states “This guide covers how to switch templates on version 7.0”.
