Can 7.1 page sections be placed side-by-side? Custom Code solutions are fine.

Is there a good (or mediocre) way to have two sections side-by-side?

Why:

On the Home page, in the first section under the header, we want a slideshow on the left and a portrait of the maker on the right.  

According to the documentation, we can't add Blocks to 7.1 Gallery Sections, and Gallery Blocks cannot be added to Blank sections.

It looks like with 7.0, we could do this within a single Section by placing a Gallery Block on the left and an Image Block on the right.  

Can we get the effect of a slideshow on the left and a captioned portrait image on the right in 7.1? Should we use 7.0 instead? Should we change our design?

I'm interested too... i need to put two carousel gallery side by side.

It is a really great limitations for sections not to be able to chose a manually gallery block  and only can chose a templated gallery block
