Having shop subcategories appear in menu?

Hello all, 

I've recently switched from a shopify lite plan that was inserted inside my squarespace to a SS exclusive shop. 

I am finding that the in-built navigation isn't particularly intuitive. 

On the menu, where a custom clicks 'shop' I would like there to be a subsequent drop down where they can select the sub-menu item to jump to the appropriate shop section immediately. 

Is there a way to make this possible? The shop sub-categories aren't actually pages, so I'm not sure how is best to go about this. 

I'm a code noob so don't have much knowledge going into this.

You can create a Folder >> Add Link Items (then enter sub categories links for these link items)
