Using Shop as your home page and accessing products through shop category navigation

I am having some difficulty putting my vision into action on my website. I am hoping to be able to have the shop as the home page and be able to see all the different categories of products available, but not have 'All Products' and every product listed on that page. The home shop page would be a welcome page with news and updates and products would be accessible through shop category filters.
