Newsletter "Require Name Field" not really requiring name

In the Newsletter config block there is a check box "require name field".   I took that to mean that the name field would be required (I want it to be).   All it did was add the name field.  It does not have to be filled in.   How do I actually make it required?

I contacted support just now with the exact same question and they confirmed that you can't make the first/last name fields required. You can only turn the display of the fields on or off.  Note the wording at https://support.squarespace.com/hc/en-us/articles/205826068-Newsletter-blocks#toc-set-up-the-newsletter-block

"Require Name Field - Add First Name and Last Name fields to the form."

I suggested they make it possible to make these fields required (preferable!!!) or change the wording to be more accurate.

In. the meantime, you have to use a regular form block instead in order to have more control over the form fields etc.
