Just to expound a bit. Your site exists independent of your purchased domain and really your built-in domain. It is sitting out there in the ether on a server. Purchased and and built-in domains are mapped to point to the site on the server. It's a bit of an over simplification but that is the general principal. Of course SS enforces that your site must have a built-in domain or you wouldn't be able to get to your site.

Thank you.  I don't quite understand that second reply, but if you could point me in the right direction to change my URL I would appreciate it.  I am paying for the domain and don't want to delete my website on accident.  Do I have to duplicate it, then name the new one what I want.. and then delete the old one?

Where did you purchase your domain? Squarespace? Another registrar?

You don't need to duplicate your site. In your current SS site you will map your domain to your website. How you do that depends on where you purchased your domain.
