How to take off newsletter message: This site is protected by reCAPTCHA and the Google Privacy Policy and Terms of Service apply

For reasons unknown, this new tagline appeared today under my newsletter sign up box:

THIS SITE IS PROTECTED BY RECAPTCHA AND THE GOOGLE PRIVACY POLICY AND TERMS OF SERVICE APPLY

Does anyone know how to remove it or at the very least style/move it?

Starting today, my website started showing the following message in the footer: 

This site is protected by reCAPTCHA and the Google Privacy Policy and Terms of Service apply

In blog posts, the message actually appears duplicated:

I don't even use reCAPTCHA for verification, but the message still appears. In the blog posts the second message appears when the related content plug-in loads, so I take it it has something to do with it.

I didn't make any substantial changes and the message appeared on its own.

Anyway, the message interferes with the user experience. I would like to put it somewhere else, translate it and customize it. Anyone knows how to get rid of the message or hide it? I want to include my own privacy policy message, according to my site aesthetics.

Previously, you had the option of using an ugly, visible reCAPTCHA on your Newsletter Block, or you could simply not have one.

However, Squarespace have now taken the unilateral decision to add an invisible reCAPTCHA to every Newsletter Block - whether you want one or not. This means that if you use a Newsletter Block you'll now see this ugly disclaimer message, in addition to the disclaimer message that you may have added yourself. The message is that required by Google as part of the terms & conditions, and explains to users that Google cookies will now be used. 

I don’t like the fact that you cannot (currently) disable the invisible reCAPTCHA nor set the style of the messaging to make it less ugly. I've provided this feedback to the team. If you also have concerns about these changes I recommend that you get in touch with Squarespace Customer Care. You can reach out to them here. The more they hear from customers, the more likely they are to take our views into consideration.

Hi. I noticed the following disclaimer has popped up at the bottom of my newsletter block:

How can I remove this please?

I have noticed the same message appearing on my website. I have contacted the support email and asked them how I can remove it. Hopefully they will offer a solution!

I got in touch with them through live chat and this is what I got:

The good news: they told me the duplicate message is something they're aware of and working on getting fixed.

The bad news: there's no way to get rid of the message nor customize it.

They've sent a feature request on my behalf, hopefully they'll consider it seriously. Clearly, we're not the only ones annoyed by the new update's unwanted message display.

I was able to hide it using the following code in the Page Header Code Injection of wherever the newsletter sign up form is.

<style>
  .newsletter-form-footnote {
  display: none !important;
}
  </style>

Hopefully that helps most of you out!

As a bonus, this also happened to make the UGLY sticky reCAPTCHA logo disappear that was showing up on the right hand side of my websites.

Oh, and as a sidenote, this will make ANY of the footnote text disappear in your newsletter form, so hopefully you can live without that for now during this weird time in the world of Squarespace 🤪

Ok thanks for the info. I'll share any info I getback from them. 

PS I just looked at my website again and now the text has gone! Maybe they removed the text in instances where recaptcha is NOT being used, as in my case.

You know, upon second glance, every site I manage has now lost the reCAPTCHA and footnote text...is there a chance that Squarespace disabled it due to our complaints? Or is my browser faking me out with some sort of weird cookies or cache thing? I only did the code suggestion here on one site, but the reCAPTCHA stuff doesn't display on any of my other sites anymore...

I feel somewhat confident now that your PS here is actually what's happening. I removed my custom code snippet I provided above and the footnote no longer shows up. I think they relieved all of us and took the reCAPTCHA stuff off unless you turn it on.

The recaptcha message dissapeared from my website too and I didn't use any code. Looks like they are working on it maybe? @belhum

You're right, @Spennie and @belhum. Tricky timing coincidence.

I just deleted the code provided by @belhum from the Page Header Code Injection and no reCAPTCHA/Google Privacy message is being displayed.

Hope it remains like this!

The reCAPTCHA (and messaging) has been temporarily removed to deal with the bug. They plan to roll it out next week when the bug has been fixed. I recommend you contact Customer Care as explained in my earlier post above.

Just to close the loop on this, here's the response I got from Squarespace Support

"I understand that on Friday you noted a Google disclaimer connected to Newsletter Blocks throughout your site, though you're not using the reCAPTCHA service mentioned in that content. 

Thank you for reporting this behavior. I can confirm this temporary issue was related to an issue with the function of those blocks on our end. Our Engineering team was made aware of the incident, and rolled out a resolution for the error within a couple of hours of the first reports of the issue. 

Following the issue's resolution, the site should no longer display that erroneous text!"

My site all seems fine and the text has gone. Hope this helps 🐵

@belhum's method didn't work for me for some reason. Took me a while, but I found another solution.

Inject this in the header of the page on which the form is found:
 

<style>
small   {display: none}
</style>

(As a warning, I think this, too, would remove all footnotes.)

Would be very grateful as my client wants his site up next week

They just told me, we have NO option but to have this sentence on newsletter blocks. 

They did it for "peace of mind"     They really did it because GOOGLE is paying them.

This is SO effing unacceptable.....This has to change

For the time being, you can hide the reCAPTCHA message by adding the following to Design > Custom CSS:

.newsletter-form-wrapper small, .sqs-popup-overlay-content small {
  display: none;
}

However it's important to note that, for the moment at least, the Google reCAPTCHA is not optional, so even if you hide the message, your visitors will be still be served a Google cookie as part of the verification process. 

Therefore, if you hide the ugly message above, you may want to consider adding your own message to the Disclaimer field.

As this was recently introduced, Squarespace are likely to make changes to the Newsletter Block in the coming days/weeks. If this happens, the styling above may need to be modified.

It ruins designs - unnecessary, redundant text that doesn't add any value.
