Looking for something more gallery like

Hi. I am hoping to set up gallery pages (I'm an artist). In my mind, I see a page full of paintings, and when i click on one painting, I see it larger, and with accompanying text, like the price, size etc.

I am having a hard time getting close to this. I chose a "Gallery" page, but nothing I select acts in this way. I thought it would be a given that a viewer would want to drill down and see details. I assume I am missing something here.

Can anyone offer pointers?
