Thumbnail image doesnt show on Shop main page

Hi all, 

I'm helping a friend build their site and this issue has slowed down the launch window for the website. In my friends shop each item has multiple images like this item:

 For some reason the thumbnails of items on the main shop page show the second image in the item section like so: 

This is a problem because I've uploaded a thumbnail in the option tab of each item but these uploaded thumbnail images never show:

I'm beginning to get very frustrated and cant seem to figure out or find threads that solve this specific issue. I'm hoping someone can help so that I can get my friends website launched on time. Thank you in advanced!

I see, The work around you suggested in this post doesnt seem to work for my case. It seems despite me selecting an image from Price and variants tab, the thumbnail image is still grabbing from the second image from the Items tab.
