Image index cut off mystery

Hi!

I am trying to fix the size of my images on my index page (list of projects). They look really long and are cut off at the top. I've tried changing the settings every way I can think of but nothing seems to be making a difference. They are cropped right now but only because if I dont crop them the hover color becomes the background and then the image looks even smaller! I've attached images below. Thank you so much!!
