Code Block interpreter sssues

I'm trying to add an HTML code block to a page.  the code contains buttons that display values in labels according to script that I have enclosed in <script></script> tags.  When I put my code in a text file (saved as .html) and open it in chrome, the code works fine.  

But, when I copy that same code into the squarespace code block, the buttons don't work correctly.

Is there something I need to know about squarespace's HTML interpreter to make this work?
