40 items limit for portfolio (SS 7.1)?

Hi,

Is there any way to increase the number of portfolio items that can be added to my Squarespace 7.1 website? I am a 3D/retouch artist and I would like one massive "work portfolio" to show my many years of experience and wide variety of projects. I never thought there would be an 'upper limit' for my gallery when buying the Squarespace subscription..

Part of the fun having my own personal portfolio website, compared to using Behance and Instagram and such, is that I can add new projects and write about them as I like, see the portfolio grow and move projects around for best exposure etc..

If Squarespace has a limit of 40 projects for my portfolio, then this was a 'big miss' for me.. but hoping there is some solution for this?

On Squarespace 7.1, you can now have up to 60 sub-pages on a Portfolio - increased from 40. You cannot have more sub-pages but you can have more Portfolio pages.

The Squarespace page limits are listed here.

On Squarespace 7.0, you can have up to 100 sub-pages on an Index.

You can add new Portfolio pages to your site.

Thanks! Yes, this seems to be my only option, but I'd prefered to have a single portfolio that could grow over time.

Was this any different in Squarespace 7.0? Could I build bigger "grid portfolios" there? Is it possible to change theme and go back to an older Squarespace 7.0 theme now?

Please see Page limits.

v7.0 doesn't have Portfolio pages. v7.1 doesn't have Gallery pages but has gallery page sections.

SS does not provide such a feature.

It isn't possible to click and move a site from 7.1 to 7.0 or the other way around but you can still go back to 7.0 if you wish. You would start a new trial using 7.0, build your site, when ready activate it move your domain and cancel the 7.1 site. You will receive an immediate credit for any time left on your 7.1 billing period. There is no quicker way to do it.

OK thanks!

  • Is there any upper limit on number of images that I can add to the gallery page section "Grid:Masonry"?
  • Is it possible to add a hover overlay effect to images in a "Gallery Grid:Masonry" (like on the portfolio pages)?

I may have found a work-around for my "40 images limit problem".

  1. First I create any number of 'Portfolio pages' that I need and fill them with my projects (max 40 items per portfolio). Then I move all my 'Portfolio pages' to "NOT LINKED", so they are hidden from the menu.
  2. I then create a new empty page that I add to the navigation bar (named "Work test", see link below).
  3. I then add a 'Gallery page section' to the "Work test" page (using Grid:Masonry).
  4. Now I upload all my thumbnails to this gallery section, as many thumbs as the gallery section allows  (I can also add multiple Gallery sections below each other on this page, if needed)
  5. Now I can manually link each thumbnail to its corresponding project URL in the portfolios (that are hidden from the menu).

It actually seems to work pretty good when testing.. Are there any easier work-arounds (if I just want one single portfolio page showing all my work)? And are there any pitfalls doing it this way, except for the extra work linking the thumbsnails to all the portfolio URLs?

See my test here (I have just duplicated the Gallery section to see how it looks) — https://elk-robin-3ckg.squarespace.com/

Thank you! So then it is possible to switch to 7.0, if I really need to.. Can I start a new trial using my same login details as I'm using now for 7.1 (google etc.) or do I need to create a completely new account?

For my needs (mostly a portfolio gallery with links to project details).. do you think I would get a better work-flow and features using Squarespace 7.0 vs 7.1?

You can use the same log-in account yes. As far as 7.0 or 7.1. All my sites are presently 7.0 but I do have a 7.1 lab testing site which I use to help answer folks here. I use 7.0 for personal use, and there are some functions I would miss if moving to 7.1 like gallery pages, summary pages that pull content from sources other than just blogs etc. 7.1 will do what you asked, both platforms have the ability to make pages with images that link to other projects. 7.0 index pages are very easy to manage I think but your solution using Portfolio pages is good too.  Best thing you can do is experiment. That is one of reasons I choose to use Squarspace, the opportunity to try it out as opposed to getting a free site when purchasing a domain like some other hosting companies offer.

Thanks again! But if I choose to start a trial using 7.0, will my existing 7.1 website be deleted then? Or can I have the 7.0 on trial and once I feel it is ready, then I do the switch?

Your original site will stay just the way it is until you decide to cancel it. You will have to activate the new one at the end of two weeks if you wish to keep it, and you can have both going at the same time, and then move the domain to the new one when ready. This is a very common thing even when moving from one 7.0 to another 7.0 template. They can be so different from each other that using the copy/switch template option is not the best way to go. I use Avenue and if moving to Brine or many other 7.0 templates, new trial and rebuild would be my way of making the move.

Hi Tenet,

I found the same limit.. I am trying to build an Index page on portwine brands, but after hitting the 60 brands, I found out about this limit. Dammit.

I cant find your website anymore and was curious if your workaround is actually a work-around that i want to use - as I don't think these gallery pages are very good for SEO performances.

Did you find another solution in the end? Thanks for letting me know!

You can consider adding a Blog Page, then in each blog post >> You will see a Source URL option > enter portfolio items here.

The idea here is that you can create multiple Portfolio Pages, and then use the Source URL option in Blog Page, and use Blog Page as Portfolio, but when users click on the post, it will still redirect to the portfolio item.

@tuanphanthanks. I dont see how this takes a way the limit as every blog post will contain 1 link to 1 portfolio page = max 60.

I also found that I can create a list of team members in 7.1 and use that as my directory page. But it's limited with options.  ( see prntscreen) The link has to go to a separate page - Or I need to create multiple portfolio pages but that takes away the premium listing model option.

The next step will be to create a membership acces so producers/brands can manage their own listings and pay for a premium listing. Is still also manageable trough the blog entries?

Hi Tennet,

I know I'm very late to the conversation on this, but I had a similar question and found one possible workaround to the limits. Squarewebsites.org has a couple plugins which may help. Here are the links and the relevant wording on their site.

https://www.squarewebsites.org/squarespace-plugins/universal-filter

https://www.squarewebsites.org/squarespace-plugins/lazy-summaries

"

Filter Result Limit
Universal Filter does NOT handle additional items loading, which means the maximum number of items you can load depends on the Block type your using (usually 20 or 30 items).

Exception: is if you use Blog List pages - the filter will try to filter/load all posts once you apply Universal Filter on a Blog List page.

The Solution:

So if you want to load more than 30 items, you’ll have to use Universal Filter on Summary Blocks  and add the Lazy Summaries plugin  (this plugin raises Summary Block Limit from 30 to unlimited).

If you wanna know more about collection and page limits, you can read about it here: Squarespace limits.

"

I can think of several instances where exceeding the limits would be extremely useful (that's why I found this post). That said, it's probably important to keep in mind that the limits are there for a reason. By stretching them, you risk the website running more slowly.

Anyway, if anyone ever reads this, hope it helps. Cheers.

These are great plugins from Squarewebsites. However, if you want to increase the limit within a Portfolio Page on Squarespace 7.1, as the original poster asked, they cannot help with this. You can only have 60 sub-pages within a Portfolio collection.
