I want to control base product stock, not variant stock

Hi I'm setting up a new website in order to upgrade and transition from version 7.0 website. I'm learning as I go along so bear with me please.

I've managed to resolve the variants which is a helpful set up. However it is also restrictive unless I'm missing something. I'm trying to allow customers to do a gift box and with that they get a base item (wax burner in this instance) but they can choose which scented wax melt they want. So the stock is actually 1, the burner, but with the melts as the variant it is indicating that there is a stock of 5. So from what I understand that means someone could go in and choose a burner and scent xx then choose a burner with scent yy but unfortunately as there's only 1 burner it's not a true reflection of the actual stock levels.

so can you control the actual base product?

You probably need to tackle Inventory to control this
