Member area questions

Hi!

We're long time Squarespace customers and are now looking into potentially adding the member area feature to our account, but we have some questions that need answering so we can tell whether this feature will work for us or not. We haven't been able to find answers for in the documentation or elsewhere.

Before I go into the questions I think we may have to provide some additional detail on our business. We are a time share housing association situated on the west coast of Sweden, close to the border of Norway. Our property consists of 20 apartments, spread evenly over five houses. When you purchase a timeshare, you own the right to use one of these apartments for two non-consecutive weeks per year (e.g. week 21 & 39) and you also get the right to apply for an additional week out of a pool of available weeks. You will also become a member of the housing association, which means you will be able to attend and vote at the shareholder meetings, can petition the board etc. You must own at least one timeshare to be a member of the association, and you can't cancel your membership without selling all your shares. As a shareholder, pending approval from the board, you may rent your share(s) to other members or non-members alike.

We use Squarespace to promote the association and also make shares available for rent via another system. We also use our site to provide members with additional members-only information, currently locked behind password protected pages. This is where we might consider using the members area feature instead, to provide individual user accounts. Before we pull the trigger though, we need to understand the following:

  1. Is it possible to restrict sign-up and membership cancellation such that only a site administrator can do this? We can't allow anyone to register for a membership, and members must remain members until such time that they sell their timeshares.
  2. Will it be possible to import members in the near future? As far as we can tell from the documentation, it's not possible to import members currently, but we'd like to know if this is on the road map and if so approximately when to expect this feature.
  3. If we have multiple member areas, can access control be set such that members only have access to certain areas? For example, any member would have access to the general members area, but only members of the board should have access to the board members area.
  4. Is it possible to set up an e-mail notification when members change their details? This way we could give our members an easy way of updating their membership details.
  5. Does Squarespace support two-factor authentication for members? If not, is this on the road map in the near future? We must do what we can to prevent malicious actors from gaining access to our membership data. While perhaps not strictly required, this would be helpful to stay compliant with data protection clauses of the GDPR regulation.
  6. Can contributor access be controlled per members area? We know there's no per-page contributor permissions (sadly!) but we can't tell if there's a way to provide or restrict access based on member area. A contributor to one area shouldn't necessarily have access to contribute to another, even if they as a member have read access as a member.

Many thanks for any help we can get!

👋 Hi there, Kosterhusen team!

I think MemberSpace could be a great fit for what you're trying to set up. We're a third-party tool that offers complementary services to fit more complex membership site needs. MemberSpace is super easy to use, developed for non-developers 😉 and user-friendly.

To start, if you need to import members in mass (more than 10), our support team will be happy to help out. Just contact us at support@memberspace.com. You can more find information about the process here

Also, with MemberSpace, you can create free or paid member plans tiers by choosing which plans grant access to specific content and member pages. This is a pretty easy and straight forward process.

Please find more information about MemberSpace here, and let me know if you have any questions 🙂
