Gallery grid simple: How do I change caption styling to hover and then reveal solid colour and caption.

I have looked at previous questions with similar requests but keep failing miserably. Essentially what I'm after is the overview that I get on my portfolio page: https://www.olihudsondesign.co.uk/work but working as a gallery grid. 

I want a simple gallery grid where the caption is revealed by hovering on the image and the caption appears over a solid colour, hiding the original image.

I want to be able to do it this way instead of the portfolio as I don't want all the images to be new pages. So may need help to turn off the captions too. 

Any help would be amazing.
