Add portfolio sections to a portfolio page in 7.1

Is it possible to add portfolio sections to a portfolio page in 7.1? I want the portfolio page to have 3 sections (kitchens, bath, exteriors) for example. Or plug-ins/work arounds?

Also experiencing this problem. Every time I edit a page the associated cover disappears from the portfolio grid on the homepage.
