Add Category to Breadcrumbs on Product Page

On the product page, category and subcategory are missing from the breadcrumbs. This is extremely frustrating, as this isn't a true breadcrumb if all it does is bring you back to the main page. Is there any workaround to show the full path with category (and subcategories if applicable) in the breadcrumb on the product detail page?

It now only shows:

Shop Home > Product Item

But it needs to show:

Shop Home > Category > (Subcategory if applicable) > Product Item

Any help? Thanks in advance!

I would say there is a bug in SS. I was just editing an item on my test v7.1 site and I have set up some categories.

I had the blouses category assigned to a product item and it showed up like...

...at the top of the product page. After editing the item. The breadcrumbs were changed to...

Basically they have removed the breadcrumbs path on the product page.

I suggest reporting this bug to SS.

Hello - I'm using the Ventura template for an e-commerce platform. My site is not live yet.

I have an issue with the product page not displaying a detailed breadcrumbs trail. It only displays the main category (Shop) and the name of the product, without showing the product's category and sub-category in-between. Does anyone know of a custom code that can be injected to show the category and sub-category in the breadcrumbs trail?

Hi Abby

I haven't seen this post before, but looking at the products today on the page https://www.littleboxes.shop/build, I can't see any nested categories. Perhaps they've been removed since this thread was posted?

Can you point me at a product that has them, and tell me what they are?

On Squarespace 7.1, Product Detail pages do not show detailed product breadcrumbs. They are limited to "Store name > Product name" with nothing in between! Categories are no longer included. This is disappointing because Squarespace 7.1 now supports larger stores with up to 10,000 products with nested categories. A trail of breadcrumbs would really help visitors navigate through a large product range.

I've built a low-cost solution adds breadcrumbs to Product Detail pages on your Squarespace 7.1 site. For more information, see the Breadcrumbs extension page on our website.

Hi, I have the same problem here.

As far as I see, products are nested in catagories in my shop. But it won't work.
In my opinion this is a basic feature any shop should be able off.

So maybe there is a misunderstanding about products being “nested”?
Isn't it just enough to give a category in the item's settings?

@paul2009 I'd be very happy, if you follow your idea to build a solution 🙂

I found this script

https://www.nichemarket.co.za/blog/nichemarket-advice/breadcrumb-schema-squarespace

but it' a lot of work because you'll have to do it for every single page and readjust the script for every single site and item. I didn't follow through so I don't know if it will do it's job … this looks painfull to do if you have more than 5 items listed. But it's said this will also work for events and blog.

Hallo Mela

Can you point me towards one of your products that is within nested categories?

@paul2009 I have nested categories https://www.shopuhhuh.com/shop/filter/collections/formless

Looking at the url for individual products, it kind of makes sense why this feature is so complex:
https://www.shopuhhuh.com/shop/p/abstraction-06-lake-1
The only info retained in the url is Shop > Product Name

Depending on where I navigated to this product from, I would want to see:
shop > earrings  > abstraction 06 – lake
shop > more filters > collections > formless > abstraction 06 – lake
shop > more filters > shop by color > latte > abstraction 06 – lake

etc.

Hallo Paul, thanks for answering that.
You can find an product in a subcategory here:

https://heckenwerk.squarespace.com/shop/p/deine-mixtur?p

the category: https://heckenwerk.squarespace.com/shop/lose-mischungen?p

the shop: https://heckenwerk.squarespace.com/shop?p

the breadcrump in the first link says:
Rauch & Glut > Deine Mixtur
according to: shop > product

I'm looking forward to get a solution. My crippely work around for now is to have two shops for the two main categories at least – but this brings it's own problems.

Also thanks to @jdillagodzilla to also pointing to the topic.
