change style of form drop down select

How do I change the format/style of a drop down in my form? All I'm getting is this...

I'd like to format the list so it's black with white text etc....

at the moment it's the standard default drop down but I'd like to change the formatting of the colour when I select the dropdown etc. 

colour, background colour, padding etc...
