7.1 Gallery Customizations

Trying to tighten up the design of a gallery I'm creating for an artist but having trouble refining the design. While I might be in over my head, my issues are as follows:

1) Static gallery that will not crop images off the screen when viewed on a mobile device.

2) Padding / spacing between images that doesn't crop any of the image on either side.
If I can't have the images show in sequence with a counter like the static site example above, this would be another excellent solution: https://gidon-levin.squarespace.com/dimona

3) Rollover / hover on images revealing caption; you'll see my feeble attempt at such in the test gallery.

Some forums have helped me get close to resolving these issues but I've still got a pretty lackluster design at this point.  Any insights would be so appreciated!
